Allegations Of Cruelty At An Iowa Pig Farm
The recent report of animal abuse at an Iowa pig farm has been brought to the attention of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). An undercover video obtained by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) at a pig farm in Iowa alleges animals were kicked, beaten with metal rods, improperly killed and otherwise subjected to abusive treatment.

Do New Caledonian Crows Solve Physical Problems Through Causal Reasoning?
The extent to which animals other than humans reason about physical problems is contentious. The benchmark test has been the trap-tube, where an individual must extract food from a horizontal tube in a direction that avoids a trap. In this study, three out of six New Caledonian crows solved the trap-tube and variations of this task. Though crows were confused by a tube with two holes they solved a visually distinct but causally similar problem, the trap-table.

Pfizer Animal Health Adds Former Schering-Plough Products To European Portfolio
Pfizer Animal Health announced that its acquisition of multiple product franchises in Europe from the Schering-Plough Corporation has been completed and approved by the European Commission. Pfizer has acquired these assets for approximately euro 116 million in cash. The acquisition adds both biological and pharmaceutical products across the major animal health species including cattle, swine, equine and companion animal to Pfizer’s portfolio.

How can closely-related species exhibit different behaviors, despite similarities in their nervous systems? In some invertebrates, single nerve cells (neurons) can be recognized across individuals within a species and even across species, allowing functional comparisons. Here, it was found that a neuron containing the neurotransmitter serotonin has different functions in two sea slugs. In one species, it was known that the neuron is necessary for swimming.

Researchers have demonstrated that protein levels in urine samples can indicate both the presence and progress of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) disease in cattle. Publishing their findings in BioMed Central’s open access journal Proteome Science, the scientists hope that their discovery might lead to the development of a urine-based test that could prevent the precautionary slaughter of many animals as now occurs when the disease is detected.
