Phylogenetic Distributions Of British Birds Of Conservation Concern
With wildlife populations reportedly plummeting, there is a pressing need to understand what makes some species more threatened than others. Because close relatives of threatened species may share many of their characteristics, it is possible to use information on species’ relationships to understand extinction risk. I reconstruct the evolutionary tree of British birds and show that species with declining populations are more closely related to each other than expected.
Sea Lice Escape Predation On Their Host, Salmon
This study demonstrates that sea lice, an ectoparasite that has challenged the health of wild pink salmon in areas of salmon aquaculture, are capable of moving up the food web to predatory salmonids when they consume infected juvenile salmon. These findings suggests that the accumulation of sea lice on predatory salmonids is common in areas of intensive salmon aquaculture which may have indirect health consequences for larger predatory salmonids.
